Knee replacement is being successfully performed all over the world for about 50 years. Traditional method of knee replacement by using the manual instrumentation have stood the test of the time and have produced reproducible good results.
Around 25 years back, using computer navigation for doing knee replacement was tried by a few surgeons. It could not stand the test of time and was mostly abandoned by the surgeons as it only increased the duration of surgical time and the cost of surgery to some extent.
Recently, robotics have been introduced for knee replacement surgery and some centers are promoting the robotic surgery.
A number of senior surgeons at the established knee replacement centers in the world have performed the comparative rantomized controle trials to study the beneficial effect, if any of the robotics in knee replacement surgery. The results showed that the X ray appearance of the artificial joints after robotic knee replacement was better than conventional knee replacement but overall success of knee replacement surgery to the patient including the complications of surgery were not different between the robotic and conventional knee replacement.
Thus the scientific consensus, as of today, is that the robotic knee replacement has no beneficial effect over the traditional surgery in terms of patient related outcome measures.
